The most common treatment medications can themselves also have effects on a woman’s emotional state. One of the most commonly prescribed medication in infertility treatment is clomiphene. Clomiphene is a medication used to treat ovulation problems, a common reason for infertility. It works by affecting a gland in the brain, the hypothalamus, leading it to trigger the pituitary gland to release the hormones LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), both of which are essential to the ovulation cycle. Another treatment is human menopausal gonadotrophin (h MG), which stimulates ovarian function. Physical side effects from these medications are well known, including symptoms of hot flashes or vision changes for example, but the emotional side effects are less discussed. Women taking this medication have described feeling out of control or out of touch with reality. For over 50 years, clomiphene citrate (also known as clomiphene, Clomid, or Serophene) has been used to help treat infertility. Clomid is an oral medication prescribed for infertility, but unlike more advanced fertility technologies, pregnancy rates with Clomid have not changed over time. Many people are aware of Clomid as a low-tech, lower-cost option than in vitro fertilization (IVF) and are happy to learn they can try this type of treatment with their existing OB/GYN or primary care physician. While many women are able to conceive with Clomid, for those who don’t, the decision about when is the appropriate time to move on to a different treatment can be unclear. Clomid is most successful as the first line of treatment for women who experience irregular or absent menstrual cycles. Clomid can also be used for women who ovulate normally, but who have otherwise unexplained infertility. Clomid treatment generally results in a 10 percent pregnancy rate per cycle, even when combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Clomid, or Clomiphene Citrate, is a medication the blocks the receptor for the female hormone estrogen. This causes the pituitary gland to secrete more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which in turn stimulates the ovary to make an egg. This medication is useful in helping women who do not ovulate regularly to produce an egg every month, but has limited use in helping women who already ovulate become pregnant. If ovulation does not occur using this medication, there are others available that may. If the medication successfully stimulates ovulation but more than four to six cycles go by without a pregnancy, other therapies should be attempted. Ovulation is successfully stimulated with Clomid in up to 80% of women who do not otherwise ovulate, and 50% of these women become pregnant. Approximately 90% of the pregnancies achieved through Clomid occur within the first four cycles on the medication. If you have ever been prescribed antibiotics for a bacterial infection, you have probably been given amoxicillin or Augmentin (amoxicillin clavulanate) at one time or another. If your child has ever needed antibiotics, both may have been prescribed. Amoxicillin is often the first antibiotic prescribed for common infections like ear infections and strep throat. It is typically used in young children because it is effective against many common childhood bacterial infections and doesn't have many severe side effects. By adding a beta-lactamase blocker to amoxicillin, Augmentin is able to overcome resistance to harder-to-treat bacteria, broadening the spectrum of infections it can treat. It is for this reason that Augmentin is referred to as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. If you have an infection and don't necessarily know which bacteria is causing it, it may seem to make sense to use an antibiotic that would kill the most bugs. Another, even more pressing concern is that using broad spectrum antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance.
