Pattern of Retinopathy: Although the locus of toxic damage is parafoveal in many eyes, Asian patients often show an extramacular pattern of damage. Dose: We recommend a maximum daily HCQ use of 5.0 mg/kg real weight, which correlates better with risk than ideal weight.

A 26-year-old black female presented in office for her annual comprehensive eye exam. Her medical history was significant for Plaquenil therapy spanning 12 years with a daily dose of 200mg twice daily. She presented with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 OD and 20/20 OS. All preliminary testing revealed normal findings. All the tests will be assessed by an ophthalmologist hospital eye doctor after you have left the clinic. A report will be sent to you, your GP and/or the hospital doctor who prescribed hydroxychloroquine. No signs of retinopathy. If all the tests show a normal retina then there are no signs of retinopathy. If you are using Plaquenil, The Wellish Vision Institute recommends regular eye exams to help catch any change that may be subtly occurring. Symptoms of retinopathy to be aware of are blind spots in your central vision, distortion of objects, blurring, light flashes and sensitivity, as well as colors becoming distorted.

Risk of Toxicity: The risk of toxicity is dependent on daily dose and duration of use. There are no similar demographic data for CQ, but dose comparisons in older literature suggest using 2.3 mg/kg real weight.

When you visit an ophthalmologist for a Plaquenil eye exam, your doctor will perform different tests to detect the presence or extent of retinal damage due to this medication. A Plaquenil screening may include a visual field test, OCT imaging, multifocal ERG, and photos of your eye. Apr 20, 2011 In 2002, the American Academy of Ophthalmology AAO established ocular examination guidelines for screening patients on Plaquenil therapy. Testing included a comprehensive eye exam that consisted of an assessment of the posterior segment with careful evaluation of associated macular changes or signs of retinal disease. 4 Baseline fundus photography was considered as an optional test. Plaquenil therapy and eye exams. De__0__0. I was told from the start by my rheumatologist I would have to have eye exams including visual field exams every six months due to the plaquenil therapy. My first two exams did include these tests. But my next six month appointment is coming up, and they told me I didn't need the visual field test.
