Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can take up to six months' constant use before an effect is seen in RA 1. A complete blood count CBC is the most commonly performed lab test in the U. S. and is used to analyze red blood cells RBCs, white blood cells WBCs, and platelets. Many people with systemic lupus have abnormal CBCs. White blood cell counts can be low leukopenia due to lupus, immunosuppressive therapy, or the presence of a virus. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus.
