My last retina scan shows some thinning of the retina so I am being scheduled with a specialist for further testing and I have been told there is a good possibility I will have to stop taking Plaquenil. I know my sight is most important but it makes me nervous that I may have to change medications. Plaquenil has been a miracle drug for me.

It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Stopping Plaquenil before surgery Lupus Forums at The. I just had major spine surgery in November. The surgeon had me check with my rheumy about stopping Plaquenil and I was told to continue it, or just stop it the day of surgery then get right back on, I asked what would happen if I stopped for a week and was told I'd risk going into a flare. I stayed on it and surgery went OK.

Hold the immunomodulators for surgery? Maybe yes, maybe no.
