We were much later told that the Plaquenil had "lowered his tolerance to infection, as it is also an immuno-suppressant." In essence, the medicine allowed the viral infection to cross the barrier between his brain and blood/lungs. His/our question is as to whether he can or should EVER go back on the medication and risk exposure to further illnesses if it is true that Plaquenil or the generic for is, in fact, an immuno-suppressant and presents a serious health risk for him?

For 25% to 30% of women who've had a urinary tract infection, the infection returns within six months. If you have repeated UTIs, you've experienced the toll they take on your life. However, you may take some comfort in knowing that they aren't likely to be the result of anything you've done. While anything is possible, plaquenil is not considered to be immunosuppressive. It is a DMARD. Also, it has an extremely long half life about 30 days or more, so stopping it when you get an infection will do little, if anything, since it takes months for it to clear your system. Be sure to notify your other physicians when taking this drug. This drug does not have a strong effect on the immune system, so vaccines recommended by other physicians are generally acceptable. Notify your eye doctor when you are on this medication so regular visual screening tests can be performed.

We've been told that his 'count' (900 cells per 1,000) was the highest infection level in the spinal fluid that the doctors had ever seen. All the patients they'd encountered w/lower levels had died. (He was never told of that risk when he was put on the medication.) Added : What I failed to mention (above) is that he almost died in April when this happened.

I thought plaquenil did not lower the immune system as badly as immonosuppressants and steroids, yet here I am a couple of weeks into it and I have a bad throat infection. Think I should hold off on taking it until I see the doctor on Monday, like I had to do with immunosuppressants?

Stopping plaquenil. DailyStrength If you don't have to, don't stop your plaquenil. I stopped taking the plaquenil the beginning of December. It doesn't agree with my stomach I take it with meals too. And since I hadn't had a miraculous recovery the 6 months I'd been on it, I didn't think there was any harm in stopping it.
