Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is an older DMARD sometimes still used for mild RA. It may work by interrupting signaling among cells. It’s one of the best tolerated DMARDs. Side effects are usually mild and may include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the drug with food may help. Changes to the skin are less common. Methotrexate, Plaquenil or Sulfasalazine Azulfidine. I can't take sulfa drugs so I haven't researched Azulfidene as much as the others, but it seems to be somewhat less commonly used in this community than Plaquenil and Methotrexate. I was started on Plaquenil two months ago and have had zero side effects beyond the very first dose.
